Pan Fish Scotland recently extended its rental contract and doubled their existing fleet of Vaki slim line frames. Production Controller Derek Smith has been with Scotlands second largest Salmon producer for over 6 years and is responsible for the operation and information gathered by equipment from Vaki.
"For Pan Fish the Vaki Biomest system is vital to ensure that there are no surprises awaiting us at harvest. All our fish are pre-sold and it is vital that we have an exact picture of each cage. The information we gather using the Vaki frames is copied to our sales department to keep them informed and make changes to our harvest profiles in advance". After evaluation of all available technology, Pan Fish began renting the Vaki Biomest system in November 2003. Two years later Pan Fish signed a new contract in for 40 of the latest Vaki slim line systems. These systems have been delivered along with the latest bluetooth Biomest CE palm tops. According to Derek the new contract ensures that every month the farm managers from all 34 Pan Fish sites are able to report accurate weight and size distribution data quickly and efficiently.
40% increase in production
Derek says "We have plans to increase production from 20,000 tonnes up to 28,000 tonnes by 2008 and we are now starting to measure fish earlier, around 500g. The wireless download of the Vaki data to the hand-held unit has streamlined the whole operation. Without returning the equipment to shore the turnaround time for each weight sample has halved".
The Pan Fish contract is supported by the Bennex Aquaculture team - Chris Hyde and Mal Scott. Included in the rental are full term warranty, annual service & cable replacement. Initial set up and training course is carried out on delivery. As part of total customer support Bennex also supply back up units to stand in for service or repairs, additional refresher courses, and preferred rates for all contract customers. Full telephone back up from Nairn and Iceland is available to all Vaki users.
On site training
The delivery of the latest Pan Fish Frames was accompanied by on-site training given by Chris and David from Vaki Iceland. Derek sees this training as vital in maximising the financial benefit of using the Vaki Biomest System. "The first 20 units were a learning curve, and good training is of key importance to ensure our staff are motivated and confident with the latest technology. We lock cages into a harvest profile in advance and the Vaki enables us to verify the biomass and distribution in the cage, which we report back to sales. This gives us another financial benefit."
A long term relationship
The partnership between Pan Fish and Vaki goes from strength to strength and Derek looks forward to ongoing joint developments. "As a company Pan Fish wish to employ the most effective technologies. We view our relationship with Vaki in the long term, and look to work with Vaki on the next generation Biomest 3000 system. Giving Pan Fish Scotland the lead in the benefits of having the frame stay in the cage permanently and feeding back the information in real time."News Archives
